Utopia Basics

The concept of utopia comes from the book Utopia written by Thomas More in 1516. For the book, More chose the name utopia because it could refer to two ideas: a perfect place and no place.

Six Types of Utopian Dreams

  • Religious–often small communities with shared religious beliefs.
  • Technological–the belief that with advanced technology we’d be able to escape poverty, violence, and war.
  • Authoritarian–a society that is perfect because of the wise rule of a “perfect” leader.
  • Marxist/Communist/Socialist–the idea of Karl Marx and other socialists that a perfect society could be created by eliminating social class and private property.
  • Commune–small groups of ideologically linked people living in harmony.
  • Evolutionary–the idea that humans will eventually evolve to a moral state in which they can live in perfect harmony.
