While you don’t need to watch this response to Waiting for Superman to be prepared for the test, I thought some of you might be interested in seeing the argument from the other side.

Great news for those of you who have procrastinated on the reading assignment! You don’t need to have it read and annotated for class on Monday as there has been a change of plans.

No Kozol for Monday. Spread the word.

As you work on your revisions on the 14th Amendment essay, these are some ofwriting the major issues to consider:

  • Topic focus needs to be on the issues of birthright citizenship and the 14th Amendment. Remember to connect your paragraphs to these specific issues, not just the broad topic of immigration.
  • Still some trouble with semicolons. Refer to this review sheet and consider doing some practice exercises here.
  • Parallelism, especially in the thesis statement, needs work. Review this information sheet on parallelism.
  • Some of you are still really struggling on topic sentences. Once again, this review sheet offers the best information.
  • Introductions were generally much improved!
  • Minor issues:
    • 14th Amendment is capitalized.
    • Don’t quote the 14th Amendment in your piece. It feels like filler and is unnecessary.
    • Make sure that your language about immigrants is appropriate.

Revisions will be due Wednesday in class for 4th, 5th, and 6th periods and Thursday in class for 3rd period.

The immigration/14th Amendment essay topic is due this weekend. Don’t forget!

Good luck!

We’ll open the education unit with this video by Sir Kenneth Robinson.
